The Story Unfolds

The Republic newspaper published an update on the Barry Huckaby story today. New facts are that he admitted to stuffing a couple of fifties into his pocket when preparing the bank deposit from the football sectional gate proceeds. He was booked on theft charges and bonded out. He's pled Not Guilty, despite his admission to taking at least $100. His attorney says there's an explanation for everything, which will all come out at trial.

It seems to me that it doesn't matter whether he skimmed of a hundred bucks or three thousand. Theft is theft. It could raise an interesting question about where the other $2900 might have gone.

Still a mystery is the basic question, "What was he thinking?". Was it common practice to skim cash from sectional football games where he came from? What made him think he could get away with it?

The story did say that he was alone in the Athletic office, preparing a bank deposit with the gate receipts from that night's football sectional. Just a practical bit of advice for BCSC and Columbus North: May I suggest that you institute a policy that all proceeds from school events be handled by at least two people until the money has been counted and the bank deposit prepared and properly secured.

Such a policy would be more likely to insure that theft won't happen in the future. Unless both of the individuals handling the money decide to steal it together, it would be a built-in deterrent. It would also assure a witness who could substantiate or refute any potential charges of theft.

Given the information presented, the best logical explanation is that Huckaby was in the office by himself with a wad of cash. He impulsively stuffed some of it into his pocket, thinking nobody would miss it. And he got caught. I wonder if he's now feeling great remorse at having given into the temptation, or if he's just sorry he got caught and blaming the school administration for blowing it all out of proportion? The statement published in The Republic from his attorney would seem to suggest the latter.

I met Barry on an airplane back when I was in High School and he was in college. We remained friends for several years, visiting and writing eachother, but have lost touch. My opinion: He's one of the straightest, narrowest people you could ever meet. I would bet this is a misunderstanding. He's a play-by- the-book kind of guy. If he did take some of the money it was probably because he had put money out of his own pocket for something for the team. It would be highly out of his character to do something like this. Like I said, he does everything right, always has, is truly one of those people who never break the rules almost to an anal degree. I'd be shocked to find out that he is actually guilty of this.

It is fascinating to hear from friends of Barry who pretty much all share the view of anonymous.

Unless local reporting on the story is wrong, there doesn't seem to be a question about the fact he took money. Still a mystery are the answers to Why and How Much?

Whether or not the anonymous theory is correct, that he may have taken some cash to reimburse himself, doesn't excuse the act. Teachers use their own money to get things done all the time - that doesn't give them the right to take football money, book money, milk money, or any other money to reimburse themselves.

I do believe there is more to the story than has been made public. I'm looking forward to getting that story.

Having known Barry and his family very well for several years, I can honestly say that I feel, unfortunatly, he is guilty. Please don't misunderstand this statement. He and his family are good people, but having witnessed all sides of Barry (not just "public" Barry) he is a habitual lier and capable of theft. (A clinical problem) I hope this incident allows him to get the help he needs. My prayers are with he and his family during this difficult time. Regardless, the truth will come out in the end.

What The Republic has failed to do, (which they do often) is report to whole story. Barry used the money to buy printer ink with the $100 that "he stuffed in his pocket". He produced a receipt for the ink. There is always more to a story like this and I don't have the space to give all the details. Lets just say this is a good 'ol pissing contest between Barry and the Superintendent

Coach Huck is a complete liar and still is. Having played basketball under him at NU, he hands players money, and lets them cheat in his math class. Not to mention he participates in sketchy business. I have seen it first hand. There is no doubt he is a liar and a thief. Anyone that wants to argue can go ahead, but you haven't seen it first hand like so many people at NU have. He often gave poorer players large amounts of spending money and gave them debit cards. He also lies to other coaches that are recruiting certain players in order to make them come to NU. No player or normal person would ever want to attend NU for four years. Boring place, bad cafeteria, bad professors, huge cheating problems, bad wifi, and just an overall sketchy place to attend school. Hopefully the NCAA catches on to this place soon.
